Sept. 15 village council meeting

Council will hold a joint meeting with the planning commission on Oct. 14 at 6 p.m. regarding proposed changes to the zoning code. In addition, council will conduct a public hearing on Oct. 20 regarding the proposed updates.

The crosswalk has been installed on Broadview Road at High Street to improve pedestrian access to Richfield Woods. A flashing beacon will be installed when it is delivered to the village.

In anticipation of creating a parking lot, the yard between two buildings on Grant Street is being cleared and the trees cut down. The tree in the middle of the lot is a healthy oak tree that will also be cleared. Construction is expected to start for the Sweet Magnolia Ice Cream shop this winter and the cleared lot will be used as a construction equipment site. Photo by S. Serdinak.

The property at 3771 Grant St., across from The Green, has been cleared to create a parking lot near Masonic Hall. The property will accommodate more than 100 parking spaces. The project is expected to take about 60 days to complete.

The planning commission approved a request to create four flag lots on about 34 acres at 3530 Broadview Rd.

The village received a request for annexation of 2.2 acres at 4895 Brecksville Rd., south of the Ohio Turnpike. Mansfield Fuel & Food Mart owns the property and about 13 contiguous acres to the west in the township.

Council must indicate what services the village would provide to the property if it is annexed.

Mayor Michael Wheeler asked council to approve an expenditure of $2,000 for a holiday party for village staff.

Mayor’s report

Mayor Michael Wheeler reported that Fall Fest was canceled at Eastwood Preserve due to the weather. He said it could not be rescheduled this year.

Training room

Councilmember Jeff Stoppenhagen reported that police officers would like to add a defensive tactics training room to the safety building. The estimated cost is $30,000.

In addition, the safety committee recommended the purchase of two new police cruisers and 10 terminals. Stoppenhagen said the safety committee was making the request, and he asked council to approve it.

Council Vice President Sue Ann Philippbar asked for more information before council votes on the issue.
