BBHHS Homecoming celebration continues longstanding traditions

From the first day of spirit week to Friday night’s big game, the buildup to the highly anticipated student dance is often more exciting than the dance itself for many students at BBHHS. Spirit week, the bonfire/parade, pep rally and the Friday night football game are annual traditions BBHHS students enjoy throughout the week leading up to the Saturday of the dance and this year was no exception.
This year, things might have looked a little different with the new campus renovations, but all the events came out without a hitch.
“The parade route [was] similar to the Memorial Day Parade event, but I think the bonfire [was] a better experience since it [allowed] more space for people attending, and it [was] be easier to hear the announcements,” said BBHHS Marching Band Instructor Seven Cocchiola.
A surprise awaited students and faculty at the beginning of Homecoming week as student government committee leaders decorated the main hallway in class colors, starting with freshmen and ending with seniors.
Monday’s theme was “Pajama Day,” and both students and staff participated.
“It’s fun and not boring, unlike any other day,” said sophomore Madelyn Borges. “It gives both students and staff a reason to dress up and have fun just for the joy of it.”
On Tuesday, when walking the halls between class periods, there was at least one person wearing a lei or bright colors. Though participation in the Hawaiian-themed spirit day was low, those who did participate went all out.
“Seeing everyone dressed up and how far some people will go for certain things is fun to see every day for a week,” said junior Claire Kirschner.
Wednesday’s theme was jersey day, and students weren’t just showing appreciation for their school, but also their favorite sports teams and players.
“I think it’s important to engage in community and school activities because as a society, we are losing that sense of community. I think it’s a really small thing that brings schools together, especially as educators,” said art teacher Julia Funk.
As the week ended, Thursday’s theme was Adam Sandler day. This day gave students and staff a reason to dress like they didn’t care.
“I loved Adam Sandler day because you could dress like a bum, but still be spirited,” said senior Caelyn Benco.
For the last day of the week and the day before homecoming, the theme to follow was class colors. Freshmen wore yellow, sophomores wore red, juniors wore white and seniors wore black. The school held its annual homecoming pep rally that consisted of fall sports, shout-outs, fun games and traditions that never seemed to get old at BBHHS.
“Students should participate in spirit week to show off some unique outfits for the theme and add a little fun to the dress code that isn’t just another daily outfit,” sophomore Savannah Kirk said.
