Three inducted into Gallery of Achievement

The Brecksville-Broadview Heights Alumni Association’s 14th Gallery of  Achievement ceremony took place on Friday, Oct. 7.

Inducted were Dominic Caruso, class of 1994; Doris Barber, faculty; Carol Buchanan, faculty; and Ed Herrick, class of 1965 and faculty. The nominations and inductions were based on their service to the community

Caruso, of the Caruso Coffee Company,  works with nonprofit Vocational Guidance Services to hire hard-to-employ adults, such as veterans suffering from physical or mental issues. He also donates to the Cleveland Food Bank for every bag or box of coffee sold. He currently serves as Vice President of Brecksville City Council.

Doris Barber had a 30-year career teaching elementary physical education and was the district’s first female athletic director. She advocated for and achieved parity for women’s athletics: equal pay, uniforms, equipment and access to practice and competition facilities. She co-founded the Brecksville-Broadview High School gymnastics team. 

Carol Buchanan spent 32 years teaching Latin and French in the district. She also organized travel for a dozen or more students to travel overseas and cosponsored ski club. She also received the Kiwanis Dedicated to Teaching Award and served  on multiple curriculum committees. 

Ed Herrick worked for 30 years as a physical education teacher and served as the district’s wrestling and football coach during that time. He was also the head football coach from 1984-1992 and continues to serve as a mentor to numerous former student athletes Nominations are now being accepted for the 2023 Gallery of Achievement class.
