Safety Town registration now open

Brecksville Safety Town registration is now open on a first-come, first-served basis to local students entering kindergarten this fall. There are four sessions this year: June 6-17, 9-11 a.m.; June 6-17, 11:45 a.m.-1:45 p.m.; June 20-July 1, 9-11 a.m.; and June 20-July 1, 11:45 a.m.-1:45 p.m. There is a registration fee of $20 per student. The deadline to apply is May 15.

As part of the program, students attend this educational program for two hours a day for two weeks learning safety topics taught by Brecksville Police Department staff and a wide variety of guest speakers including firefighters, nurses, park rangers and lifeguards. Many of the safety lessons are followed up with arts and crafts projects, books and videos and exercises. A miniature town complete with streets, houses, traffic signs and a working traffic light is set up outside the classroom. Children learn traffic signs and rules as they drive peddle cars around the town. They can also park their cars and practice pedestrian safety on the town’s sidewalks and crosswalks.

Students entering 7th grade or older are eligible to volunteer at Safety Town. Those interested can email mkrzynowek@brecksville.oh.us to request an application. ∞
