First Serve volunteers to gather in North Hill for Sept. 13 Interfaith Day of Service

Organizers of the First Serve Day of Service are preparing to welcome hundreds of volunteers to the North Hill neighborhood of Akron on Sunday, Sept. 13, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., for a day of hands-on projects for all ages and abilities, cultural immersion experiences and getting to know neighbors from different faith traditions and backgrounds.

“This is our biggest Day of Service yet,” First Serve co-director Amy Baldwin said in a press release about the event. “We will be completing over 60 projects at many different sites throughout North Hill, allowing us to strengthen relationships that build hope in our community. We invite anyone interested in getting to know their neighbors from North Hill and other faith communities in the area to join us.”

This is the 15th year for the First Serve Day of Service, an interfaith event organized and led by First Serve and First Congregational Church of Hudson in partnership with Temple Beth Shalom, the Islamic Society of Kent and Akron and other faith partners and community organizations in Akron.

Schedule for the day:

8 a.m. – Coffee, donuts and T-shirt pickup on the front lawn of 915 North Main St., Akron.

8:30 a.m. – Interfaith Sending Service led by faith leaders from multiple faith communities at 915 North Main St., Akron.

9:30 a.m. – Projects begin in various locations throughout the North Hill community of Akron.

12:30-1:30 p.m. – Picnic lunch at 915 North Main St., Akron.

1-4 p.m. – All-day projects continue to completion.

First Serve supports local nonprofits, the city of Akron and Akron Public Schools to help connect volunteers with partner organizations in the North Hill community of Akron, such as Findley Learning CLC, Forest Hill CLC, Harris Jackson CLC, North Hill Community House, Friends of Elizabeth Park, Gennesaret Soup Kitchen and Grace House.
