April 8 city council meeting

Following a public hearing on the matter, members of Broadview Heights City Council at their April 8 meeting passed a resolution declaring the necessity of the renewal of a tax levy to provide funds for payment of salaries of permanent police personnel in the city. The resolution received two prior public readings.

The levy, which was first approved by voters in 1964 for 0.75 mills, which was reduced to 0.7 mills pursuant to provisions of the Ohio Revised Code, expires every five years. Language for the issue as it will appear on the Nov. 5 general election ballot was included in the resolution. According to a form submitted to the county, the 0.7 mill per $1 of taxable value equates to $20 for each $100,000 of appraised property value.

In other business, council passed resolutions for:

  • An agreement with Elan City Inc. for the purchase of three radar speed signs at a total cost of $8,350. During a March 25 work session, Service Director David Schroedel said the two signs would likely be tested on Richard Road. A third portable, solar-powered speed sign may be tested on Royalwood Road.
  • An agreement with Design 2 Wellness for the purchase of cardio equipment for the fitness center at a total cost of $85,308 to include a combination of Stairmaster, Matrix and NuStep products.
  • An agreement with Health and Fitness Equipment Centers for the purchase of cardio equipment for the fitness center at a total cost of $266,113 to include a combination of Precor, Sci-Fit and Octane products.
  • An agreement with G & G Fitness Equipment for the purchase of cardio equipment for the fitness center at a total cost of $13,540 to include a combination of Life Fitness Rowers and a Jacob’s Ladder.
  • An agreement with Design 2 Wellness for the purchase of new flooring for the main level of the fitness center at a total cost of $74,438.

During reports from the mayor, Sam Alai noted that an application to the state of Ohio for a $5 million grant to be put toward the building of a new fire station headquarters on the city campus had been submitted earlier in the day. Alai said he expects to receive notification on whether the city has received the grant or not in late May. ∞
