Independence High students complete Dale Carnegie Course

Every Monday evening for eight weeks, 24 Independence High School students attended The Dale Carnegie Course: Skills for Success for Young Adults. On Nov. 19, they came together at Independence City Hall to celebrate their graduation from the course. The students earned two college credits in oral communication from The University of Central Missouri.

Participating students included Sam Apolczer, Samuel Belitz, Ginger Crist, Erica Esper, Ben Firrell, Taylor Gillespie, Eleni Karnavas, Andrea Klima, Kylen Krupa, Colette Liepert, Jessica Massey, Katie May, Emma McGreal, Olivia Michota, Megan Mowrer, Lexi Prokopius, Patrick Roote, Sela Sears, Sara Skrocki, Emma Somrak, Kalli Spisak, Kyle Streibel, Connor Synek and Dia Zizis,

The Dale Carnegie curriculum, which was developed with feedback from students, includes few lectures. Instead, class time is highly interactive, with students participating in exercises and speaking opportunities designed to help them gain confidence and develop better communication, leadership and interpersonal skills. The classes revolve around five core objectives: increasing self-confidence, improvement of people skills, communication skills, leadership skills and controlling stress and worry.

This was the fifth time the course – co-sponsored by Independence Local Schools and 25 & Alive via the city of Independence – has been offered at Independence. Including this graduating class, there have been 118 participants.
