Police Beat

Aug. 5 – Police were advised of a suspected impaired driver on E. Pleasant Valley Road who was unable to stay in the lane and had no taillights or headlights. When stopped by the police on I-480, the backseat passenger got out of the vehicle, sat on the guardrail and put on noise-canceling headphones. He resisted being detained and was arrested for obstructing official business and resisting arrest. His Lyft driver was advised on his traffic violations.

Aug. 7 – During a traffic stop on Brecksville Road, police found the passenger to have sores on her arms and blood on her neck. She also was emaciated, had poor dental hygiene and was rocking back and forth. The driver had a bloody nose. Police believed they were narcotics users, and a K9 conducted an open-air sniff of the vehicle. A pat-down on the driver led to his arrest when police found drug paraphernalia. The passenger had two warrants for drug-related charges and was to be indicted pending lab results of suspected heroin on her person.

Aug. 8 – A resident reported that a man directing traffic on Hillside Drive punched his truck mirror. After asking to speak to the man’s boss, the resident said the man struck his mirror again and grabbed his truck handle and his shirt to get him out of the vehicle. He was unsuccessful and, as the resident drove away, the man reportedly struck the back of the vehicle with a metal bar. The man directs traffic when a company delivers pools and claimed that the driver was speeding and that he put up his hand to protect his face from the mirror. The man said he felt threatened by the driver and was trying to keep the other employees safe. The man also stated he opened a baton and the top flung off, hitting the back of the truck accidentally. The driver was cited for disorderly conduct. The man was charged with disorderly conduct, criminal damaging and criminal tools.

Aug. 13 – Police conducted a traffic stop on Rockside Road in which the driver had multiple warrants. Her male passenger had a dog with him in the back seat. He secured the dog and left the traffic stop. Upon a probable-cause search of the vehicle, police found various drug-related items. The driver was issued a misdemeanor citation for drug paraphernalia.

Aug. 16 – Officers observed a minivan on I-480W traveling at a slow speed. It made unsafe lane changes and then accelerated past the speed limit to get away from the police car. It eventually pulled over, and the driver had slurred speech, dilated pupils and his pants zipper was undone. The female passenger had red marks on her arms and poor dental hygiene, which are associated with drug use. The driver admitted there was marijuana in the vehicle. A probable-cause search found various drug paraphernalia. The female passenger and the backseat male passenger both had active warrants. The male passenger had a glass pipe on him that he tried to smash and was charged with tampering with evidence. After the driver went through standard field sobriety tests, police arrested him for OVI for being impaired by narcotics.

Aug. 17 – A traffic stop was made for a car with tinted windows. The driver appeared nervous, was sweating profusely and could not give his Social Security number. He had multiple active warrants and a suspended license. He stated he was going to a hotel in the city to purchase fentanyl from a hotel guest and was going through drug withdrawals. He was cited for attempted drug abuse and taken to the hospital for treatment.

Aug. 17 – Police saw a man known to have a felony warrant with the Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Office for violation of sex offender registry. He is also suspected of dealing fentanyl and promoting prostitution. The suspect refused to stop while riding his e-bike, which led to a pursuit ending with police catching him on foot when he tried to run. He is to be indicted for failure to comply.

Aug. 17 – During a traffic stop on I-480E, police found the driver had red marks on his arms and, in a prior incident with the man, he had been in possession of firearms and narcotics. Officers searched the vehicle and found $467, marijuana THC vape cartridges and an unknown white powder, unknown crystal rock-like substances, partially crushed pills, two glass pipes, a broken pipe, a digital scale, a Glock firearm magazine, loose rounds and shell casings. Police found a firearm hidden inside the plastic of the vehicle console. The driver was charged with trafficking drugs.

Aug. 20 – Police saw the man from the Aug. 17 incident at a gas station on Rockside Road. He still had a warrant through the county sheriff’s office. Officers arrested him and, during a pat-down, found $400 cash, marijuana and suspected cocaine on his person. The county stated they did not have enough manpower to accept the man, and he would have to be released. Police gave him a criminal summons for drug abuse. He was taken to the hospital because he said he “shot up drugs 15 minutes ago.”

Aug. 21 – Police stopped a car on Rockside Road for tinted windows and no illumination of rear plates. There was marijuana in the vehicle’s ashtray, and the passenger had a firearm on his person. The passenger was given a criminal citation for carrying concealed weapons.

Aug. 23 – A car at a Rockside Road business had expired plates. Police talked to the driver and observed two marijuana packages in the car. During a probable-cause search, officers found a handgun, which the driver had lied about having. She was issued a criminal summons for failure to notify and was educated on updated Ohio marijuana laws.
