Football players, coaches make impact at Special Olympics event

For the fifth consecutive year, members of the Independence Middle School football program demonstrated what it means to be a Blue Devil by volunteering at an annual Special Olympics event.

This June, nearly 20 football players and coaches dedicated their time to help Special Olympics participants, cheered on athletes, assisted with activities and ensured a successful day.

IMS football coach David Weiss coordinated the partnership through his place of employment, Every Moment Counts, a mental health promotion initiative for youth.

He said volunteers made a lasting impact on everyone involved. “They were engaged, helping my students, bringing enthusiasm and doing any tasks they were asked to do. They were a joy to have at the event.”

The volunteers’ efforts did not go unnoticed. Weiss said school administrators, staff members and family spectators all commented on the student-athletes and coaches’ positive attitudes and outstanding job throughout the day.

The annual tradition has become a meaningful opportunity for IMS football players to give back to the community while building connections with Special Olympics athletes.
