Meet the Candidates – Broadview Heights Mayor

Broadview Heights Mayor Sam Alai is seeking his fifth term in office at the polls this November. He is running unopposed  on the ballot, however, we asked him three questions regarding his views on the city. The following are his unedited responses,  which were limited to 225 words. ∞

1. What were you not able to accomplish in your last term that you plan to tackle in the next four years?

Alai: We will continue working on projects in the next term such as paving roads, stormwater management, and senior services. As we did in the last term, we are always striving for excellence for our community.

2. As you look back on your time in office, what do you consider your most significant achievements?

Alai: It’s not about “my”  most significant achievements. I have always believed in collective ideas.

Our city council, staff, and community continue to work with me to create positive initiatives. I have always believed in a team approach. Obviously the buck stops with me, but I am lucky to be surrounded with intelligent and hard-working people who help me to keep Broadview Heights the wonderful city that it is. If I had to name one specific accomplishment,it would have to be our new recreation center. The programs and facilities that  we can provide  for our community are unparalleled! In addition, I am very proud of the fiscal responsibility exercised by this administration. We have significantly increased our rainy day fund since I took office in 2007 as your mayor.

3. How do you plan to address the fire department’s needs for additional space?

Alai: First,we will not go back on the ballot  again. Last year, I felt it needed to go the voters so they had an opportunity to decide about a facility  that is greatly needed, and I respect their decision. Over the next few years, we will be looking at grants and other cost-saving measures. As an example, we were recently awarded  a grant for $250,000 from the county  for the fire station. Without question, the facility is needed, so I look forward to engaging with experts in the field, as well as the community, to determine the next course of action. ∞
