Voting in midterms is just as important as voting in presidential elections
To the Editor:
Election Day is just days away and many in our community assume this year’s midterms don’t matter. They do – arguably more than the presidential race did.
Congress writes our laws, and your congressman and senator are on the ballot. So is our governor, along with our state legislators, attorney general and judges. Judges deserve particular attention. Their decisions will affect many in our community – whether in civil cases or criminal cases. And even if you are not appearing before them, they decide who goes free on bail and how long criminals are taken off the street. And few voters vote for judges, so your vote counts much more in those races.
Read the charter amendments, too. This year, one proposal increases how much the mayor can spend without council approval. This increased from $10,000 to $25,000. Others change how long council members and the mayor can serve, and another requires two fire stations to remain open. There are more – read them. Charter amendments typically pass or fail by small margins, then bind us for decades.
Midterm turnout typically runs near 40%, far below a presidential election. That thin margin is exactly why each vote counts more here, not less.
Presidential elections set the tone. Midterms write the rules. I urge everyone to vote, especially my Republican friends.
