Superintendent’s Corner

When we talk about the success of Hudson City Schools, we naturally focus on our students, our staff and the opportunities available throughout our district. Perhaps less visible, but equally important, is the continuous work required to maintain our buildings, technology, equipment and infrastructure that support those opportunities every day. In school districts, the Permanent Improvement Fund (PIF) plays an important role in that ongoing work.
Simply stated, the PIF is dedicated to capital improvements, equipment and other items with a useful life of five years or more. These funds are not used for employee salaries or personnel costs. Instead, they provide a dedicated resource for maintaining and improving the physical assets of the school district. Over the past five years, Hudson’s PIF has supported projects across virtually every aspect of our operations.
Safety and security continue to be a priority. PIF dollars have supported improvements to security cameras and notification systems, along with communication radios that allow staff throughout the district to stay connected. These funds have also supported student technology, helping us maintain the tools our students use for learning each day.
The PIF also allows us to improve existing spaces and create better opportunities for students. Recent examples include acoustical improvements to the Hudson Middle School band room, HVAC work at Hudson High School, improvements to our baseball and softball facilities, a new floor in the Hudson High School main gymnasium, and playground improvements throughout the district.
Of course, some of the most important investments are the ones that receive the least attention. Maintaining and repairing roofs, mechanical systems and other major components of our buildings is critical. Addressing those needs proactively helps protect our facilities, extend their useful life and preserve the investment our community has made in its schools.
We have also continued to develop landscaping and exterior improvement plans throughout the district. We believe the appearance and condition of our schools should reflect the pride we share in the accomplishments of our students and staff.
Our school facilities belong to this community, and caring for them is an important responsibility. The Permanent Improvement Fund allows us to plan beyond the immediate need – to maintain what we have, make thoughtful improvements and ensure that the places where Hudson students learn, perform, compete and grow continue to serve them well for years to come.
