Brecksville Road to be resurfaced following repairs
by Laura Bednar
Sept. 8 city council meeting
Independence and the Ohio Department of Transportation are joining forces to resurface portions of Brecksville Road.
ODOT has committed $850,000 to resurface Route 21 from Rockside Road to Rockside Woods Boulevard and from I-480 to the northern boundary line for the city as part of its 2026-2029 state infrastructure plan. Independence is responsible for the remaining project cost of $238,000 plus construction inspection and construction administration costs.
The resurfacing will be done after the completion of the Brecksville Road streetscape improvement project underway on the north end of the road. ODOT expects to accept bids for the project in March or April 2027.
Tennis/pickleball courts
Council left on first reading legislation that would increase the amount for repair and resurfacing of the city’s tennis and pickleball courts in Elmwood Park. Council previously approved the bid from Vasco Sports Contractors to perform the work for $49,730.
Recreation Director Tom Walchanowicz requested a $5,077 increase for the project to replace the existing windscreen at the courts. Three quotes were obtained for windscreen replacement, and the lowest and best bid was Tennis Court Supply.
Walchanowicz said work on the courts is set to begin the week of Sept. 20, weather dependent. It was pushed back due to the high school tennis team utilizing the courts.
