Symptoms of a L5/S1 Disc Problem

by Dr. Andrew T. Brady, Chiropractic Physician

Have you ever heard someone complain about having a “bad back”? It’s a common issue, and low back pain is one of the most debilitating conditions in America. However, did you know that a disc problem can be the underlying cause of many back issues?

Intervertebral discs are like tiny cushions that separate your vertebrae. They’re composed of fibrocartilage with a gelatin-like center called the nucleus. In a healthy spine, these discs maintain stability and allow for free movement. Injuries, lifestyle habits, and prolonged sitting can lead to spinal misalignments and restrictions, causing these discs to weaken or become damaged.

When these discs don’t receive the necessary care, they can begin to deteriorate, resulting in herniations, displacement, or tears in the cartilage called annular tears. This can manifest in a range of symptoms, from morning stiffness to numbness and tingling in the legs.

Here are some common symptoms of a L5/S1 disc problem:

  • 1) Morning stiffness
  • 2) Cramping or “pre-cramp” feeling in one or both calves
  • 3) Twitching or vibration sensations in the leg or hip muscles
  • 4) Numbness, tingling, weakness, or heaviness in one or both legs
  • 5) Feet falling asleep after sitting for a while
  • 6) Tight hamstrings or IT bands that persist despite stretching
  • 7) Difficulty contracting the abdominal core
  • 8) Low back pain (although it may be absent)
  • 9) Frequent need to find a place to sit down
  • 10) Legs getting tired easily

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, it’s crucial to seek the advice of a chiropractor. The key is to get an evaluation before these symptoms manifest, allowing you to take proactive steps to prevent the development of these problems. Qualified chiropractic physicians can perform a comprehensive evaluation and typically identify and address or alleviate the severity of your disc issue. This can help you regain mobility and enhance your overall quality of life.
