Hudson in the Underground Railroad

Hudson Heritage Association will begin its season of public programming Sept. 10 with a presentation on Ohio’s and Hudson’s roles in the Underground Railroad. Dave Gates, education specialist for Remember When Outreach and Summer Programming at the Summit County Historical Society, will discuss how Ohio helped Freedom Seekers on their journey to Canada and how Hudson became part of the network. Gates also will address common myths about the Underground Railroad, including whether black bands on chimneys marked safe houses and whether so-called “secret rooms” were connected to the movement. Gates began volunteering with the Summit County Historical Society in 2010 and later joined its education department after retiring from Summit Metro Parks.

The free program will be held at 7 p.m. at Barlow Community Center. Refreshments will be served following the presentation
