Area students will have the opportunity to sing, act and dance this summer as they refine their musical theater skills as part of a triple-threat musical theater camp that runs June 5-July 22. The camp is being presented by the Rising Stars program at Medina Centre for Dance Art.

The 60-hour camp will take place Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, from 9 a.m.-noon, giving performers ages 9-18 the opportunity to rehearse for and present Peter Pan Jr. July 21-22, at the Public Square gazebo in Medina.

“Peter Pan Jr. is a story which encourages each of us to reconnect with the spirit of youth,” says Connie Laettner, program director at MCDA Rising Stars. “I am excited to help the students as they find their own unique way to express what joy, freedom, adventure and imagination means in adolescence.”

The Rising Star program is in its second season. Studio owner Kelly Parks said she is proud of how far the triple threat program has come in such a short time.

Parks said students enrolled in camp audition for roles in the performance, take jazz and modern classes, work with vocal director Alice Rizzo and round out their skills with stage direction and acting time. She said the camp will also help students identify the basic elements of a musical; sing on pitch within their appropriate singing range; recall and recite assigned lines; collaborate with a team; memorize and perform choreography; gain self-confidence and learn accountability by participating as part of a full cast.

Students interested in attending the camp are invited to contact MCDA at www.mcdadance.com/rising-stars. Peter Pan Jr. is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International. ∞
