Series explores tools that built the Connecticut Western Reserve

The Summit Historical Society will host a series of five programs explaining the importance of selected tools used by the early pioneers of the Connecticut Western Reserve. Dave Gates, Society Education Specialist, will be presenting his findings on these tools.

Each program will be held on Thursday evenings at 7 p.m., February – June. They will be approximately one hour and will be presented in the John Brown House, 514 Diagonal Rd., in Akron. Parking is available in the new paved lot south of the home.

There are a limited number of 30 seats for each program. To ensure your seat, advance registration is required via EventBrite or the Society office at 330-535-1120. There is a $10 dollar admission charge (free to current Society members; but registration is required) per person per program for in person and a $5 admission for virtual participation (free for Society members). Registration must be made no later than the Tuesday before each program.

February 17, 2022 - Sleds as Tools

Explore these ancient tools that helped move almost everything.

March 17, 2022 - Cutting Tools: Part 1

Arguable, the most important invention ever: axes, adze, saws and pocket knives.

April 21, 2022 - Millstones, Grist Mills and Grindstones

Learn what these often forgotten and confused tools were, and what they did.

May 19, 2022 - Wagons

Wagons were specific to use and very important as our country expanded westward.

June 16, 2022 - Cutting Tools: Part 2

More of the most important tools, including: braces, chisels, frow, gimlet, planes, beetles and mauls. ∞
