Kirby Day (Sept. 7)
Sept. 7
Kirby Day
Join the Friends of Richfield Heritage Preserve on Saturday, Sept. 7, 12-4 p.m., in celebrating Kirby Day to honor the legacy of inventor Jim Kirby. This free event – held rain or shine – features fascinating STEM activities, kids’ crafts, games, ice block sledding, and marbles, including a treasure hunt, DIY marble run and the game of marbles. Kirby was an expert marbles player, which has inspired the marble games at this event.
Larchmere Fire Works will provide glassblowing demonstrations and attendees will have an opportunity to make their own items for a fee. A unique, operating miniature vintage machine shop diorama will be on display [See article “1890s shop replica will be on display.”
In addition to the Kirby House and the Kirby Mill, some other park structures will be open that day. Refreshments will be offered for a donation, and Friends’ merchandise will be available for purchase.
Richfield Heritage Preserve was once home to inventor Jim Kirby and his home still stands on the property along with the Garfield Hall, with a floor built over springs, and the mill he constructed in 1922 to produce hydroelectric power for his home and workshop.
The Friends have raised funds and reconstructed the water wheel and pit, to make the wheel operational again. They continue to raise funds to repair the mill house and the swinging bridge, and other items associated with the mill. To find out how to support the restoration, visit friendsofrhp.org/donate.html.
The Friends have been accepted as a host for the Ohio History Connection’s “Ohio Open Doors” – a 10-day event when Ohio historic buildings and landmarks open their doors for special tours and events in an effort to promote, educate and inspire pride in Ohio’s heritage.
Kirby Day will be held at the south end of the park, with parking at the Route 303-Oviatt Road entrance. ∞
