Superintendent’s Corner – Dana Addis
Once a year, the state of Ohio releases its State Report Card, which is a single measurement of success that is highly anticipated and critiqued by school communities for a variety of reasons.
Ohio has moved to a 5-Star rating system, with a score of 5 representing “significantly exceeding state standards” or “significant evidence that the district exceeded student expectations” in the established category. The categories are Achievement, Progress, Gap Closing, Graduation and Early Literacy. Our district is proud of our students, staff, school community and families, who all contribute to the growth and success of the district. Hudson City Schools not only earned an overall rating of 5 Stars, but also – for the first time in district history – earned 5 Stars in every single category.
In addition, the district’s Performance Index Score (which represents the achievement of every single student and not just those who score above Proficient) was 106.9. The score was the best among Summit County districts, ranking us fourth in Northeast Ohio and 14th out of Ohio’s 611 school districts. The 106.9 also represented the fourth consecutive year that our PI score increased. It is a measurement point for organizational improvement, something we consider on a daily basis.
While we celebrate this achievement, the district considers this as a single measurement piece, and its order of importance could be determined in a number of different ways. Our students’ opportunities, sense of engagement and approach, relationships with one another and adults, and pursuit and knowledge of what they see as success may all be more important than a report card, and we want to work just as hard in all of those areas.
Amidst these moments of celebration is the reality that we will always have work in front of us. We have students with many different needs, ability levels and different emotions. The ability levels include some of our youngest students who are just learning to read and write, and we want to always protect them and continue to move them at a pace that works with their own growth schedule. We want to thank all of you for the support you show us daily and for contributing to our success. We will always approach our areas of concern and necessary support with the same passion we approach our successes. ∞
