Advertiser’s claims are purposely misleading
To the Editor:
Thank you, editors, for your service to the community. Information is valuable and powerful. We implore you, however, to honor that responsibility and fact-check any “informative advertisements.”
A recent entry, paid for by a single person, listed inaccurate and dangerous claims related to BBH Pride, HRC and GLSEN. This ad, based purely on uniformed opinion, was veiled as “information.” This citizen has repeatedly used your magazine to express their personal rejection of others’ rights and lived experiences. With proper research, ScripType would have learned the ad was purposely misleading.
One of many falsehoods: the advertiser claimed that Kevin Jennings said “children should be used as political pawns.” The advertiser purposely omitted the critical word “not.”
The truth: “In response to Gov Ron DeSantis’ ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill, Chief Executive of civil rights group Lambda Legal, Kevin Jennings, said the group would challenge the law in court. ‘Our young people are not political pawns,’ said Jennings.” (Reuters, March 2022)
BBH Pride cites resources provided by national leaders in LGBTQ+ education. These organizations exist because they are effective and impactful. If community members are not in support of, or are angered by, these organizations, that is not for BBH Pride to resolve. We focus on supporting, protecting and celebrating LGBTQ+ residents of Brecksville/Broadview Heights through fellowship, education and advocacy.
Rather than learning about us through social media and false “ads,” we invite members of the community to come to our events and participate in meaningful dialogue.
Please do better. ∞
