Don’t put off dental appointments – tooth decay spreads!
by Dr. Zenon Farian, DDS
If you’ve been putting off dental appointments, you could be making your situation worse! Tooth decay is notorious for its ability to intensify and spread when untreated.
All cavities are caused by mouth bacteria, which feed on plaque and food residue. Everyone has this bacteria, and no one has “cavity-proof” teeth. Some patients apply the logic of bodily health to their teeth: don’t seek treatment until you feel something hurting. If you believe you must wait to “feel” a cavity before you fill it, there are several problems with this thinking.
First, there are three parts of the tooth: the enamel, the dentin, and the nerve. Most people don’t feel a cavity until it’s reached the innermost part of the tooth, where the nerve is found. By waiting that long, you have probably just bought yourself a costly root canal.
Additionally, as the decay spreads, it eats up more of the tooth. In dentistry, you want a healthy ratio of tooth to filling; a tooth with more filling than natural tissue is prone to breaking and needing a root canal. Furthermore, decay can spread. That bacteria in your mouth doesn’t just stay on one tooth. It can spread to other teeth, leading to the need for more fillings.
So what are you waiting for? Filling your cavities when they are small lets you save your tooth, your money, and your time! If you haven’t been to the dentist recently, who knows what could be happening in your mouth? Make an appointment with Dr. Farian, and we’ll get you back on track!
Keep Smiling. And make it a good one!
