Let’s Talk About Hybrid Water Heaters

by Tom Olecki, Owner, Broadview Heating

With the discussion about electrification becoming more and more prevalent, we are getting an abundance of calls about converting to hybrid water heaters. So, what exactly is this new technology about?
Hybrid water heaters are super-high-efficient electric heaters that generate hot water for about one-third the cost of conventional electric water heaters. In actuality, hybrids use about the same energy as a 100-watt incandescent light bulb. It does this using heat pump technology. Hybrid tanks pull heat energy from the air around them making them one of the most energy efficient heaters available.
Hybrids deliver more hot water faster than typical standard electric heaters. Everything is included in one package and the tank fits virtually anywhere a standard electric or gas tank will fit. Installing a hybrid tank is as easy as any other water heater installation. No venting of flue products is necessary through the sidewall or chimney so they can be installed almost anywhere.
These tanks are not only packed with features that help keep energy bills as low as possible but also include the following features:
*Substantial federal tax credits of 30% of the installed cost, up to $2,000. The dates for this credit are Jan. 1, 2023-Dec. 31, 2032.
*A LeakGuard system that detects water leaks from the tank and automatically shuts off the water to the tank. Maximum leakage before detection is only about 20 oz. in less than 15 seconds. An audible alarm also sounds if a leak has been detected.
*Built-in wi-fi technology allows you to monitor and control your tank from your smartphone with a free app.
*Weekly, monthly and yearly usage reports are available on your phone to help you manage and control costs.
*Five different operation modes, including vacation, high-demand, energy saver, electric and heat pump modes, allow you to tailor usage to your lifestyle.
*Technicians can view diagnostic and trouble codes right at the heater or via the app for ease of service should trouble arise.
*Tanks are available in sizes to fit any home or lifestyle including 40-, 50-, 65- and even 80-gallon capacities.
*A 10-year limited tank and parts warranty is standard.
*Installed costs are about twice the cost of a standard electric tank, but with the features you receive standard, along with tax credits and energy savings, hybrid tanks easily pay for themselves in a short amount of time.
