Please support Richfield Township waste-hauling levy

To the Editor,

Township voters will be asked to approve a 5-year 1.1-mill waste-hauling replacement levy on May 2. The existing 1.1 mill levy for this purpose expired on Dec. 31, 2022.

Along with the Village of Richfield, we negotiated a new 5-year contract with Rumpke. It is for the same level of service as the expired contract. Nevertheless, in an open bid process, the first year’s cost is 17% higher than the cost in 2022 and increases by 4% each year through 2027. Some important points to consider:

• Despite the significant cost increase, the levy will remain at 1.1 mills.

• The cost to the township in 2023 is approximately $4 per house, per week, which we believe is lower (and with less hassle) than residents could negotiate on their own.

• If the levy passes, we still project a small shortfall in our waste-hauling fund by 2027. We anticipate that this shortfall will be mitigated by increased income from our Joint Economic Development District.

We respectfully ask for your support of this levy on May 2.
