Superintendent’s Corner by Dr. Joe Clark

It’s unbelievable to me that March is here already. That means our schools are getting ready for state testing, spring sports, spring break and many other activities. Here are a few news items that may interest you.

Mock Trial team success

Congratulations to the Nordonia High School Mock Trial teams for their success at the regional competition at the Cuyahoga County Courthouse in downtown Cleveland on Feb. 17.

Team “Checkmate” defeated St. Edward High School and Independence High School to win both trials, allowing them to advance to the state tournament, which was held in Columbus on March 9-11. Winning Outstanding Attorney awards were Christian Chang and Olivia Tidmore, and winning Outstanding Witness awards were Kennedy Auman and Morgan Root.

Team “Lawst Cause” defeated St. Joseph Academy but then lost to another St. Edward High School team to end their season. Winning Outstanding Attorney awards were Jack Malloy and Keirstin Trehan, and winning an Outstanding Witness award was Wes Donnelly.

Endre Szentkiralyi and Farhad Sethna coach the teams.

Winter sports

Congratulations to Nordonia sophomore swimmers Hailey Kaminski and Emily Yourkievitz on qualifying for the state swim meet on Feb. 24 in Canton. The boys varsity wrestling team won the sectional tournament at Austintown Fitch on Feb. 25. The team advanced wrestlers in 11 of the 14 weight classes to the district tournament at North Canton Hoover High School.

Both the boys and girls varsity bowling teams qualified for the OHSAA State Tournament on March 10 (girls) and March 11 (boys). This is the girls’ first time as a state qualifying team while it is the boys’ fifth trip in the last six years. The boys basketball team played for a district championship on March 4 after beating Mentor in the district semifinals on March 1.
