Levy goes to ballot, two-year school calendar approved

Voters will see a levy renewal and addition on the May ballot for the Independence Local School district.

The renewal of the existing emergency levy, which expires in December 2024, amounts to $4.25 million, and the additional emergency levy is $3 million, for a total of $7.25 million each year for a period of 10 years, according to the resolution. The Cuyahoga County Fiscal Officer determined the millage rate to be 13.96 mills for each dollar of taxable value, which amounts to $452 for each $100,000 of property valuation.

Independence Board of Education members voted unanimously to send the levy to the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections.

School calendar

A two-year calendar for school years 2023-2024 and 2024-2025 was approved. The 2023-24 calendar shows students starting school on Aug. 23, 2023, with Thanksgiving break from Nov. 22-24, winter break from Dec. 22, 2023-Jan. 5, 2024, spring break from March 29-April 5, and the last day of school on June 5, 2024.

The 2024-25 school year begins on Aug. 21, 2024. Thanksgiving break is set for Nov. 27-29, winter break is from Dec. 23, 2024-Jan. 3, 2025, and spring break is from April 18-25. The last day of school is June 3, 2025.

Organization

Board member Joan Mencl was sworn in as board president and Carrie Sears was sworn in as board vice president. Regular board of education meetings were set for the third Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. ∞
