Highland board member receives state award

Robert W. Kelly, a member of the Highland Board of Education, was presented with the Ohio School Boards Association’s Veteran Board Member Award at the association’s 67th annual Capital Conference and Trade Show on Nov. 13 at the Greater Columbus Convention Center.

The award is presented to school board members in recognition of 25 years of service. Of the more than 3,500 board members in Ohio, only 28 received the honor in 2022.

Kelly, who is president of Bil-Jac Foods, is serving his seventh consecutive term on the Highland Board of Education. Throughout his tenure, he has remained committed to helping the district maintain its legacy of excellence in academics, the arts and athletics. A lifelong resident of Granger Township and graduate of Highland High School, Kelly and his entire family have been generous supporters of the district, the Highland Foundation for Educational Excellence, and the community at large.

Prior to joining the Highland Board of Education, Kelly also served 16 years as a Granger Township trustee and 14 years as a member of the Medina County Board of Education. He was elected to the Highland School Board in 1998.

“Mr. Kelly has proudly represented all Highland students and families over the past 25 years, and we are honored to have him serve as a member of our board of education,” said Highland Superintendent Catherine Aukerman. “His integrity, support and advocacy for the Highland Schools is unwavering. Throughout his time on the board, he has worked in conjunction with the administration to enrich academic offerings, increase extracurricular opportunities, and improve the overall landscape of the community with our new school buildings and athletic facilities. Mr. Kelly is the epitome of Highland pride, and we are pleased that he is being recognized for his service by the Ohio School Boards Association.”

Dr. Norman Christopher, Highland School Board President, echoes Aukerman’s sentiments.“Mr. Kelly has been a tremendous friend and champion of the students, staff and communities that encompass our district,” Christopher said. “Bob is among the most knowledgeable and committed leaders in public education. His top priority is that all students have the opportunity to learn, grow and succeed while attending the Highland Schools and beyond.” ∞
