The Independence High School girls’ golf team set a season-low of 161 shots in a matchup against Orange High School on Aug. 30. The team has blazed through the early part of its season, with this win putting them at a perfect 6-0 to start the year.

The 161 shooting mark is the third time the Blue Devils have broken into the 160s this season. Previous matchups this season yielded scores of 167 and 164, making the 161-shot performance the crown jewel so far.

“The girls just keep getting better,” Coach Karl Schuld told ohiovarsity.com’s Steve Hare. “They’re still working on their putting and their chipping, which is where they score. We talked a lot about not missing putts on the low side and all those little things that will hopefully lead them to cutting off a stroke here or there, because we know how important each stroke is.”

The Independence Home Days car show recently crowned winners in five categories. Dale Veverka’s 1970 AMX and 1967 Rambler Rogue took home first in the American Motors category, Mark Kobak’s 1965 Mustang won the Ford category, Tom Sech’s 1957 Bel Air won among GM vehicles, and Dave Clark’s 1970 Superbird took home gold in the Mopar category. Additionally, Ken Lasky’s 1934 Rolls Royce won in the “other” category.

The following Independence natives have been named to John Carroll University’s spring 2022 College of Arts and Sciences Dean’s List: Samuel Apolczer, Anna Balicki, Zachary Barther, Alec Coutris, Brittany Dufalla, Erica Esper, and Tyler Sagi.
