Cans for kids

Mary Mondozzi, education coordinator for Akron Children’s Hospital’s Paul and Carol David Foundation Burn Institute, gave an overview of the “Aluminum Cans for Burned Children” program and how people can help. The hospital provides specialized inpatient and outpatient care for burn victims of all ages throughout Northeast Ohio, according to akronchildrens.org.

Community members can collect cans, which are turned in for money to fund patient care needs not covered by insurance, sponsor programs for burn victims and sponsor social events for survivors.

Mondozzi listed some specific programs: juvenile fire stoppers, to teach children how to avoid accidentally starting a fire; a burn survivor support group to help people deal with stress and returning to their lives; and a burn survivor retreat.

Fire Chief Robert Campbell said there is a can collection station at Bath fire station No. 1, 3864 W. Bath Rd. All aluminum materials are accepted and donations must be bagged and tied.
