Bear moves along after brief sighting in township

A black bear was spotted in Bath Township early in July. Police Chief Vito Sinopoli said the police department received reports of the bear on Shade Road, and 30 minutes later on Ghent Road. Fairlawn Police confirmed a sighting of the bear on Stanley Road.

Sinopoli said experts suggested the animal was most likely searching for a new habitat. If a bear is encountered, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources recommends turning away from the animal slowly and creating distance, especially if the bear is accompanied by a cub.

“Food sources from trash cans and bird feeders should be secured to discourage bears from remaining in a particular area for an extended period,” Sinopoli said. ∞
