Recreation center to adjust membership rates

by Dan Holland

Membership rates at the city’s recreation center are on the rise with new rates to take effect Sept. 6.

“It has been four years since we have done a rate increase, and we wanted to make the membership options simpler and easy for patrons to choose,” said Director of Parks and Recreation Amanda Hutcheson.

According to a memo sent from Hutcheson to city council members and the mayor dated May 5, the updates are necessary to “support increased costs of the recreation department and to bring our membership types and policies up to date with surrounding communities.”

Under the new plan, approved by city council June 20, individuals will pay an annual resident or non-resident fee with additional members in the same household (under 18) paying a smaller fee on a per-person basis, which will replace the previous family membership rate.

Individual yearly rates for adult residents will be $240, while a non-resident would pay $450. Monthly installment payments will end, as members can opt to have monthly payments – based on the yearly rate with an additional 30% cost – set for automatic withdrawal with an option to cancel anytime during the year with a 30-day notification requirement.

Two-adults, single-parent with children and college student rates will no longer be offered. Yearly memberships for seniors, veterans and youths will be available for $120. Drop-in fees will remain $10 for residents and will increase to $20 for non-residents.

All members 18 and over will be entitled to 120 hours of free group exercise classes throughout the year.

“The rate adjustments and membership options will streamline the process to join the rec center and afford opportunities for all family members,” said Hutcheson via email. “It will grow and enhance our group exercise program and allow members to try classes for the very first time. Flexibility was key to all of the adjustments that we made, making sure customer service is at its best.”
