Four BBH figure skaters win at state championships

Four members of the Brecksville-Broadview Heights Figure Skating Team won events at the Ohio High School Team Figure Skating Championships, held Feb. 8-9 at Thornton Park Ice Arena in Shaker Heights.

The Bees finished eighth out of the 12 public and private high schools that competed in the United States Figure Skating Association-sanctioned event. The team is comprised of students from BBH High School and middle school.

Sophomore Mackenzie Gray placed first in pre-preliminary compulsory moves and second in pre-preliminary free skate. Sophomore Chloe O’Brien won the open juvenile free skate and the open juvenile short skate and was second in showcase. Sophomore Laney Karpowicz placed second in no-test free skate and fourth in showcase.

The team welcomed middle-school skaters this year. Seventh-grader Meghan Schuster won in pre-juvenile moves in the field. Seventh-grader Lauren Shivey placed first in juvenile short and first in pre-gold solo dance. Eighth-grader Faye Albrecht was second in pre-juvenile moves in the field. Seventh-grader Mallorie Kostyack placed third in no-test free skate.

In team maneuvers, O’Brien and Shivey placed third in jumps, fourth in spins and third in steps. Albrecht and Schuster were sixth in jumps, ninth in spins and sixth in steps. For more information, contact team manager Amy O’Brien at kmusik@aol.com.
